The purpose of this study was to determine if the use of graphic organizers in small group reading would increase students overall reading comprehension (within, beyond and about the text). At the start of the year I noticed that my students were struggling to articulate and comprehend what they read. I wanted to find better ways to teach this skill to my students. Based on my research, I decided to implement graphic organizers during my guided reading block.

My study began at the end of January with a baseline assessment and student attitude survey. From there I focused on a different comprehension skill each week based on the district provided curriculum. The week began with a whole group introduction to the reading strategy. Then during our shared read of the week the graphic organizer for the given strategy was introduced. By the end of the week, students completed the graphic organizer during guided reading with their leveled story of the week. At the end of the study the students were able to independently complete the graphic organizers.
